Safety Service Director

The Safety Service Director has the responsibility to oversee the day-to-day operations of the City. The mission of the Safety Service Office is to provide effective and efficient city services that improve the lives and experiences of the residents of, and visitors to, the City of Mount Vernon.
The Safety Service Office supervises the following departments: Code Enforcement; Engineering; Fire; Parks, Building, Lands and Cemetery; Police; Streets; and Utilities. The Director supports each of the City department heads in achieving their mission. This is accomplished through effective planning, teamwork, empowerment and collaboration.
The Safety Service Director is appointed by the Mayor of Mount Vernon and is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of Mount Vernon City Council.
ABOUT RICK
Rick came to Knox County, from Cleveland, in 2000 to attend Kenyon College where he received his BA in Psychology and English. He served eight years as a firefighter and paramedic in Knox County, two years with the Mount Vernon Fire Department, before taking over as 9-1-1 Director for Knox County in 2011. During this time he earned his MA in Public Policy and Management at The Ohio State University. Before his appointment as Safety Service Director Rick spent 3 years as a project manager and government consultant where he received his certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) through the Project Management Institute.
